– a step-by-step picture & video guide
Today I’m sharing a new stitch tutorial guide with you; The Back Loop Single Crochet. This is really just a single crochet. The only difference is that you will crochet only in the back loop of the stitch & not the whole stitch. To understand this stitch you will have to learn how to find the back loop, & I’ve tried my best to describe this. This stitch really makes a lovely texture, & are often used for ribbing. You can find it used on the bottom sweaters, mittens & hats. Since it only contains single crochet stitches it’s quite easy to learn.
If you have bought one of my patterns, you might wonder how it is done. The pattern always offers written text in addition to charts, but now I will share a step by step picture guide with you. In addition there is a video of how to crochet this stitch on the bottom.Today I suggest that you learn the stitch & then you should use it in a project! You can make you own project, but on the bottom of this post I have also included all crochet patterns that are using the “Back Loop Single Crochet”!
Back Loop Single Crochet – the STEP-BY-STEP picture guide:
1. Identify the front & the back loop
For this tutorial I have started to crochet 1 row with chains (11 stitches) & 1 row with single crochet stitches. This is described in “The beginners guide to crochet” parts 1 & 2.
In this picture you can see what the back & front loop is. If you are holding the row with single crochet stitches looking at it from the top you will see two loops, the two loops that you usually crochet through when you do a “normal” single crochet. The one closest to you is the “Front loop” & the one furthest away is the “Back loop”.
For this tutorial you will be crocheting through the “Back loop”.
2. Insert hook in back loop
Insert hook in “Back loop” from front to back.
3. Yarn over
Yarn over from back to front.
4. Draw up a loop
Draw up a loop.
5. Yarn over & pull through both loops on hook
Yarn over & pull through both loops on hook.
I’m jumping a bit quick forward here, but if you are wondering how these two steps that are combined in this picture are done, look at the video & check “The Beginners Guide to Crochet part 2” – instruction number 5 & 6.
